Some people might assume that getting braces is purely an aesthetic choice, but that just isn’t true. We recommend that anybody faced with crooked teeth get braces not only to boost their self-confidence in their smile, but also to address any issues with misaligned bites. Misaligned bites and teeth can cause jaw pain, general discomfort, difficulty chewing and speaking, and headaches.
Braces can be an effective boost to your oral health with the added benefit of a dazzling, even smile.
How Do People Clean Their Teeth While Wearing Braces?
When it comes to effectively brushing your teeth while you have your braces installed, slow and steady wins the race. Take your time — there’s no reason to rush it — especially when you could do damage to your hardware, or skimp on proper techniques, which could lead to cavities or gum disease.
Try rinsing your mouth with water before you brush to get rid of any large pieces of food debris caught in your teeth and braces. Then, carefully angle your brush on your gum line and brush the top portion of your teeth above the brackets. Do the same for the bottom portion of your teeth below the brackets. Soft dental picks can also help get into the nooks and crannies of your teeth and braces, especially when flossing.
After we install your braces, we will give you a primer on how to keep them — and your teeth and gums — nice and clean throughout the process. If you have any questions or experience any issues, feel free to give us a call or simply ask us during your checkup.
How Long Do Braces Need to Work?
Just like every smile is different, every orthodontic case is different. Generally speaking, the more movement your teeth need to complete to become properly aligned, the longer you will need to wear your braces.
On average, most people wear braces for one or two years before their orthodontic treatment is complete. In some cases, treatment can be completed in as little as half a year. It really just depends on the person. No matter how long your braces experience lasts, we will be there every step of the way. For most of our patients, we like to keep close tabs on your progress. We’ll probably see you every month to make sure everything is going according to plan — and to make any adjustments you might need.
It’s important to note that we want you to be an active participant in your orthodontic journey. That means keeping your teeth properly cared for with good dental hygiene habits at home, and letting us know if you’re experiencing discomfort or pain due to a step in the process, a misshapen wire, or a certain bracket on a tooth. It also means that you have the opportunity to help determine the end result of your smile. If you’re not satisfied, we’re not satisfied — let us know if you’d like to see a tooth in a different position, or a different look overall.
