Sedation Dentistry – Dental Anxiety

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, also known as sleep dentistry, is a dental treatment in which you are relaxed and sedated during your dental care. From mild to moderate sedation, you can rest assured that you are well cared for in the hands of the Centerburg Dental Care team.

What Types of Sedation are Available?

There are several types of sedation, each with a varying level of sedation for you, depending on the circumstances of your treatment and what your personal dental health plan entails. They include:

  • Oral sedative drug: You will be prescribed a medication to take by mouth prior to your appointment. The medication helps relieve anxiety and makes you relax for your treatment. You will likely not remember the details of your appointment, and you will need to arrange for transportation to and from the office.
  • Nitrous oxide: Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a face mask when you’re sitting in the dental chair. The gas helps you relax and relieves mild discomfort during treatments. When your treatment is complete, we will turn the gas off, and you will return to normal in a matter of minutes.
  • IV sedation: Once you are in the dental chair, we will place an IV on you so that you will go completely to sleep during your visit. When the IV is removed, you will wake up — though you will require some time to recover. You will likely need a ride back home to rest.

Prior to deciding on a course of sedation, we will consult with you on the state of your current overall health, your medical history, and other factors to decide what is best for you. Together, we will find a plan that works so that we can give you the most compassionate and comfortable care for your oral health available.

What are the Benefits of Sedation During Dental Visits?

There are many reasons why sedation dentistry is beneficial. One of the most common reasons you might choose sedation dentistry is if you have an overwhelming fear of going to the dentist, or if anxiety might keep you from scheduling and attending regular appointments. It is crucial to your oral health to have cleanings and exams every six months, as these appointments help prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, catch dental issues early, and screen for oral cancer. We use sedation to help make you comfortable so that we can give you the best care possible.

Other benefits that sedation dentistry offers include relaxing younger patients who have trouble sitting still throughout their dental visit, accommodating people with neck or back injuries who are uncomfortable sitting and reclining in the dental chair for long periods of time, and making patients calm and comfortable during longer treatments, such as wisdom teeth extraction, root canals, and other procedures.
